For the SWACHHTA ABHIYAAN (First posted on "Facebook" on November 11, 2015)

We all know, proper recycling of waste is essential not only to save the environment but also for people's health and wellbeing.

Most of the waste or garbage from every household is in the form of plastic, cardboard, glass and metal containers used in the form of packages for food and household items purchased from the retail outlets.
Short-term re-cycling strategy for the manufacturers and the packaging and distribution units:
Manufacturers can link their distribution system with the retailers and e-commerce companies like Reliance Fresh, More, Big Bazaar, Flipkart, Amazon, etc. and even local supermarkets to encourage the consumers in returning the packaging of the goods they had purchased. Customers can return the packaging and purchase the manufacturer's product at a discounted price. For instance, edible oil manufacturers can encourage their consumers to return empty plastic containers to their registered retail outlets.
The benefits of such practices:
1. Glass, metal and plastic packages of consumer products such as oil and beverage bottles and cans can be reused by the manufacturers and packaging ancillary units preventing the counterfeiters from misusing them.
2. For economically effective recycling of Waste.
3. Manufacturing units can register local recyclers for organised and systematic recycling of waste. Garbage collectors can collect dry and wet garbage from every house and shop in the locality to recycle.
3. Townships and villages should be encouraged to set up bio-gas or bio-energy units in their locality to use the bio-waste from residences, hotels and farms as raw material.
4. Above all, it's important to involve local youth and community to generate awareness among the people to set up public toilets connected to the bio-waste treatment plant generating bio-energy.
5. Mass awareness drives in the locality to keep their locality clean preventing health hazards and epidemics like malaria, dengue, cholera, etc.; because we habitually prefer to buy pest and mosquito repellents.
6. Local self-governing bodies like village panchayats should be responsible and accountable for the locality's effective waste and garbage management. Discourage the residents of the locality from indiscriminate dumping and burning of garbage and take necessary measures to have the residents adopt and practice proper garbage management steps.
7. Electronic waste can be recycled into tablets and computers for school and college students.
Please share this post with all your friends so that we become aware of and implement these steps for the benefit of us all.
